Alaric’s wine, Rossini and the bottle of Maiocchi
In 410 A.C. Alaric, King of the Visigoths, during his march to Rome, appreciated the Verdicchio so much that it loaded many barrels on 40 mules. However, we start talking officially about Verdicchio at the end of the 16th century when it appears in some formal and notarial deeds for the passage of vineyard ownership. From '600 onwards it began to be studied thoroughly, and it is only at the end of the' 700 that, with the name Verdicchio, is officially considered as a useful vine to be vinified. From then on it creates a very close connection with the Marche region first in the classic area of the Castelli di Jesi and then also in the typical area of Matelica. Various ampelographic scholars have clarified the origins of this vine variety. In particular in the last decades a great similarity with the Trebbiano di Soave or Trebbiano di Lugana has been discovered, however it maintains its own autonomy that confirms Verdicchio being an autochthonous variety of the Marche. Verdicchio has seen an increasingly progressive success, loved by the locals and by the great international gourmets, starting with the Pesaro-based Gioacchino Rossini, who counted him among his favourite wines. Since the 1950s, Verdicchio has seen a great sales success due to the increase in production and exports. The idea behind the Fazi Battaglia Producer was that in 1954 he launched a competition to create a special bottle. The model created by the architect Antonio Maiocchi won. Maiocchi, starting in the '60s, determined a great notoriety of the company and of Verdicchio in general.
An old restaurant with a youthful flavour
In Rome, by chance, you come across a good restaurant in Trastevere which is stuck in the '60s and focused on fish. In particular, you will be moved by the cart of appetizers that you have not seen since your childhood. Among the proposals rediscover an appetizer of sea and shrimp and fresh trade prawn (they say they come from Terracina) but pleasantly retro. You decide to order a Verdicchio and enjoy the perfect and consolidated combination. You lose yourselves in the memory of your Father, a lover of Verdicchio, who fifty years earlier at the end of that lunch would have turned his pestilential but adorable Gauloises into the restaurant.
Between Ancona and Macerata
A native vine variety from the Marche, typical of the Colli di Jesi, in the province of Ancona, and of Matelica in the province of Macerata.
