A much debated origin
It is an ancient wine that, according to various hypotheses of origin, has become a native Ligurian of the Riviera di Ponente. Its name seems to derive from the roman piactus, intended as the manifestation of the spots on the clear peel of the grapes. There are various hypotheses about its provenance: the first is that it was introduced in Liguria by the Ligurian colonies in Greece during the Middle Ages. Another idea is that, through a series of territorial routes and varietal modifications, it crossed Spain, Corsica and Sardinia, and then finally Liguria. Other hypotheses consider Pigato linked to the Vermentino family (including the Favorita delle Langhe) both for morphological characteristics and for places of presence of the two vine varietes. There have been many discussions but, even today, there is no official confirmation of the real correspondence of the vine varietes which therefore remain officially similar but separate. The main difference is found during the ripening when the Pigato grapes show an intense yellow color, almost amber-colored, with the typical rust-colored dots.
The white of the "sea wolves"
A cold February you participate in a regatta of the winter sailing championship of the Western Ligurian Riviera. It's been a busy day: tramontana created the best condition, but you're very tired. In the evening, with the crew, you return over Albenga to dine, before falling into the arms of Morpheus. Everyone is tired, satisfied and with flushed and warm cheeks . You choose a restaurant on the hill overlooking the sea. The menu is homemade and it offers the classic pansotti with pesto and then a guinea-fowl with olives. You opt for a two-year-old Pigato that fit in perfectly with the Oste's proposal and, when you open the tenth bottle, it brushes you with a Ligurian spirit. In the meantime the sly heart of the crew becomes more and more carefree and joyful.
