Name of 'compound' derivation
Negroamaro of Salento is an indigenous wine of ancient origins. Its presence in Puglia and southern Italy dates to pre-Roman times. For someone, Negroamaro refers to the very dark and not very transparent color of the wine (the Latin word Nigro merges with the Greek word Mavro which means Black). This hypothesis seems to support the Greek origin of the vine variety. For others, the name seems to derive from the color (Nigro) and the bitter taste typical of wine, perhaps induced by the remarkable tannins that it presents. Salento has become over time the land of this variety, although in the beginning it was present in many regions of southern Italy. Due to its strong acidity, in addition to red, it is possible to have the Negroamaro Rosé, White and Spumantizzato. Until the end of the 50s, Negroamaro was also a wine of great export. From the early 60s it began to work to enhance local productions independently.

Salento: the land of a thousand beauties ... and delicacies
Today it is a typical wine of Salento. It is in the provinces of Lecce and Brindisi and, more marginally, in the provinces of Bari and Taranto. The main assembly is with the Black Malvasia with which it participates in the construction of the important Salentino willow. With about 32,000 hectares of vineyards, the vine variety is ranked 60th in Italy as production.
