Historical notes

Federico Barbarossa and the siege of Ancona

It is an ancient native vine, whose origins are lost in the mists of time. Today it is produced exclusively in the municipality of Morro d'Alba in the province of Ancona and in a few surrounding areas. In ancient times, it was also widespread in Campania, Umbria and Apulia. The name derives from the very thick peel that when it breaks, leaves some drops of juice that seem tears. Many have looked for the real genesis of the vine variety and have not found a certain answer. We owe the first historical mention to Federico Barbarossa who, during the siege of Ancona, in 1167 elected Morro d'Alba as a place of shelter and garrison, forcing the local population to share with him and his army the few local resources including the wine: Lacrima di Morro d'Alba. It is normally vinified dry and rarely aged in wood to maintain the typical fragrance and intensity. Sometimes it is vinified passito.
