The "ruby" of the Riviera di Ponente

It's an ancient vine variety with undefined origins. It's assumed that the original stock was born in Greece. It spread in southern France and in particular in Provence with the name of Tibouren and in Italy in the area of Dolceacqua and of the Ponente Ligure with the name of Rossese. In fact, the name derives from the color: a ruby red that can turn to transparent garnet with aging. Gallesio (1772 - 1889) in his text the "Italian Pomona", dedicated to the fruit species grown in Italy (especially apples), also speaks of the Rossese grape. The production became stable and grew only in the nineteenth century. There is also a white Rossese that seems to originate in the eastern Ligurian and which is genetically quite different from Rossese. Then there is a Rossese from the province of Savona, Campochiesa, which over time has shown different characteristics from the Rossese di Dolceacqua.

In the western Riviera

The production is centered in Valle Nervia and Valle Crosia, above all, in the Municipalities of Ventimiglia, Dolceacqua, Camporosso, Soldano, Isolabona, San Biagio and Perinaldo. It is used in the DOC Riviera Ligure di Ponente and Dolceacqua.
