Bacchus-Tobacco Match: Brunello di Montalcino and the Tuscan cigar Millesimato
Brunello di Montalcino, 100% Sangiovese Grosso, is one of the most important and long-lived italian wines. Until 1876, the name Brunello was considered a type of grape typical of Montalcino, later on Sangiovese Grosso. Throughout the Middle Ages the area of Montalcino was not popular, but it was renowned because of the production of a vigorous and important wine that, at a certain point and in modern times, has been called Brunello. The invention of modern Brunello is to be attributed to the Biondi Santi Family, who experimented in Montalcino the production of a red wine from the mid-800s. In 1852, Clemente Santi presents for the first time two bottles of pure red wine in Florence, during the Natural and Industrial Products Exhibition in Tuscany. For the first time, in 1869, someone officially talks about a wine called Brunello, with the victory of two silver medals for a "Brunello" Red Wine of 1865 at the Agricultural Fair of Montepulciano, until 1885 when the Enological Institute of Conegliano, mentioning the province of Siena, highlights the importance of Brunello di Montalcino. From then on, also other local families, realizing the great potential of the wine, start to invest and produce it. The story from then on is always on the rise, even if it had a slowdown between the two wars. It then began a gradual development after the second war, particularly in the 50s, that led Brunello di Montalcino to be considered one of the main wines of Italy and the world.
